Chris Owens at Murtha Peace Rally - Aug 29, 2006, Park Slope, NY : The race for Congress in Brooklyn's 11th district is heating up as just weeks remain. On August 29, 2006, hundreds gathered in response to a call by Owens opponent Yvette Clarke to join her and Rep. Anthony Weiner at a rally "to stand against the Iraq war." Invited guest was war critic, John Murtha, Congressman from Pennsylvania. People interested in ending the war turned out to pack the Park Slope Methodist Church. Unexplained by the meeting's sponsors was why their sudden interest in peace since both Weiner and Clarke have not been known as vocal advocates of peace. Neither, to my knowledge, has ever participated in the organized peace movement or spoken at any rally opposing the war. While welcoming John Murtha to the community and approving of Weiner and Clarke's activity on behalf of putting an end to the Bush fiasco in the Mideast, supporters of Chris Owens, the genuine progressive in this race, stood outside with signs and buttons.
