Vote And Live At Habana Outpost : Oct 8, 2008

A diverse crowd of Brooklyn residents jammed into Low Post, the cozy performance spot attached to Fort Greene's popular Cuban restaurant, Habana Outpost on Fulton Street.

The occasion, taking advantage of the excitement around the runup to November's historic election, featured an examination of the special problems and serious obstacles confronting ex-convicts as they rejoin society but are very often denied the rights of citizens by being blocked from voting.

A new movie by filmmaker Samson Styles, LOCKED OUT - EX-CONS AND THE VOTE, was shown. A discussion, led by Styles, followed. Performers, including Spiritchild and Aliza Hava, reved up the crowd for an exciting evening. Here are photos from that informative evening which was sponsored by the Fort Greene Film Society.

No Bush Bailout - Rally on Wall Street : Sep 25, 2008

Several thousands demonstrated in NYC today against the Bush robbery plan to solve the financial crisis confrontin the U.S. and word economies. "Trust me to solve the crisis," says the leader of the bunch who brought us the crisis. "And don't ask questions, just give me the money." Is this guy kidding? Everything he has ever touched has been a disaster from baseball teams to oil companies to a so-called war against terrorism to the well-being of our country. Trust him? Americans are saying NO to Bush and the pretender to the throne - Bush's clone, John McCain. Similar demonstrations took place throughout the country but perhaps not with as much symbolism at this located at the scene of the crime: Wall Street.

Another Wall Street rally is scheduled for Monday, September 29th at 12 noon. Called by Jessie Jackson and the Transit Workers Union (TWU), it should be attended by all who want to move the country in a different direction after eight years of the house wreckers misleading our country and destroying our world.

Working for Obama in Philly. : April 18, 2008

Along with friends, Ted and Jane, I drove to Philadelphia a few days in advance of the Primary election therre. Wanting to contribute to the exciting movement developing around the candidacy of Barack Obama, we spent the day canvassing the Germantown section of the City of rotherly Love. We knocked on close to 200 doors ina mostly African-American neighborhood and were warmly received with interest and excitement. We returned to New York at about 9 o'clock, tired but energized from doing our part in turning the country around.

Support Rally to protest jailing of Roger Toussaint. : on Apr 25, 2006, thousands of New Yorkers, gathered at the plaza next to the Brooklyn Borough Hall. They were rallying and later marching across the Brooklyn Bridge to protest the anti-labor jailing of Roger Toussaint. The President of Local 100 of the Transport Workers Union was thrown in jail by a judge as punishment for leading his members in a strike to preserve their standard of living. Joined by community leaders, city councilmembers, a Congressman, clergy and dozens of NYC union leaders, the rally expressed a militant solidarity and determination to fight back against the draconian Taylor law that outlaws strikes by public workers.

In Rachel Corrie's Words : March 22, 2006 - In the light of the cancellation by the Manhattan Theater Club's production of My Name Is Rachel Corrie, several thousand New Yorkers turned out tonight at Riverside Church to hear writers, artists, playwrights and activists speak her writings. The play would tell the story - in her own words and emails - of the courageous 23-year old American woman who travelled to Gaza to protect innocent Palestinians and who stood in front of an Israeli bulldozer in an attempt to prevent the driver from destroying a Palestinian home. The bulldozer drove over her and then reversed and crushed her a second time. "My back is broken," she said before she died.

Declaring that the Sharon government could destroy her body but could never kill her spirit, people have stood up to those who would cave in to the new McCarthyism that attempts to stifle opposition and protest to the unjust policies of the U.S. and Israeli occupations.

Labor says NO to 4 more years of Bush! : On September 1, 2004, the NYC Central Labor Council called for a historic Labor Day march outside the Republican National Convention. Thousands of New York workers converged on Madison Square Garden on 8th Avenue. They opposed four more years of Bush policies of aiding the rich while trampling on the rights of labor, waging an immoral war while ignoring rising unemployment at home and cutting the taxes of the super-rich while 45 milliion Americans go without health insurance. Speaker after speaker attacked the Bush administration and urged thousands in the audience to apare no effort to make sure that the President is retired this November 2nd.

Give Bush A Pink Slip : September 1, 2004 - Thousands of New Yorkers formed a line from Wall Street to Madison Square Garden. For 15 minutes they stood silently while holding aloft a pink slip. This was the symbol of the rising joblessness brought on by 4 years of the Bush policies of aiding the super-rich and crapping on the rest of us. It's the first Administration since that of Herbert Hoover where joblessness has increased for three years in a row.

August 29, 2004 - The World Says NO to the Bush Agenda! : August 29, 2004 - It was the largest demonstration in NYC in decades. According to the NY Times, a half-million people walked the streets of our fair city to protest the Bush Gang's policies of war, greed, hate, cutbacks and repression. We were happy to take part in this historic march. It seemed to me that all of New York had turned out to say NO to Bush and Chaney.
