A Bike Ride To Governors Island : July 24, 2009

Stacey and I took a ride to Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge, then down Broadway to the Battery. There we boarded a free ferry to one of New York's greatest new parks: Governor's Island. Formerly, a Coast Guard base, it has been dormant and decaying for years.

It's back! And what a great thing that is for New Yorkers and visitors alike. Take a look at some photos I took. We want to return again and explore some more. There's a lot to see or you can just kick back, bring a picnic and have a relaxing time enjoying stupdendous view of New York's awesome harbor and skyline. - Matt

A Walk On New York's New High Line. : Jun 15, 2009

Rode into Manhattan by bike today, locked up our bikes and climbed the stairs to New York's latest wonder - the elevated park known as the High Line.

Formerly an elevated railroad line, serving local factories and warehouses and running several miles on Manhattan's lower and mid west side, the High Line had been abandoned for decades.

Instead of demolishing it, far-sighted individuals had visions of an elevated promenade and boy, were they visionaries. This is one hell of a stroll - you're floating over the city - not high up as in a plane, but just above it as perhaps in a low-flying balloon. You can see all the details of the city from this vantage point - buildings hover above, the streets with their cars and people just below. The Hudson is a block away and as the old rail turns, there's 10th Avenue making its way north.

The old, rusty iron rails have been torn up and placed back into wonderful wild gardens that border the concrete esplanade that has been put in place by the park's designers. Here and there, stairs and elevators descend to the street below, providing access at various points.

The High Line is a great addition to New York's parks and is certainly one of the city's most unique spaces. A must see!

A Walk On Manhattan's East Side : Feb 26, 2009

Stacey and I went to see Enter Laughing, a very funny musical being staged at St. Peter's church near the Citicorp building on Manhattan's East Side. We took a subway to Union Square and walked up Third Avenue from 17th Street to the low 50's for dinner and then the theater. Here, some photos I took during our walk. - Matt
