A Brunch On Fifth Avenue : Oct 3, 2009

And that's Brooklyn's Fifth Avenue, if you please.

Got an invitation from our new next door neighbors - Jennie and Furyk. It seems Furyk would be hosting at a local bistro on Fifth Avenue - Park Slope's restaurant row. Canaille Bistro has been there for a while but had only been serving dinner. Now they were launching a new brunch on weekends and my neighbor asked us to join them and check it out.

Stacey was down in Virginia with the kids so I rolled myself down Prospect Place on my bike (it's all down hill) and had a lovely time, meeting their friends hanging out with Jennie and Baby Truman and sampling some really good food - and yes, imbibing a super bloody mary, mixed by Furyk himself and topped off with blue-cheese stuffed olives! Highly recommended. And thanks to our neighbors for including us in this fun event.

Car Crash On Underhill Avenue : May 18, 2009

Sitting in my house today around 6:00 pm, I heard a loud crash in the street. Running out, I saw a scene on our corner that resembled something out of a disaster movie.

A car, driven by one of the attendants at our parking garage, was delivering a BMW to its owner. He exited the garage and drove the BMW south on Underhill and at the corner he collided with a car traveling west on Prospect Place. The other car, a brand new Range Rover, on impact with the BMW, lost control, swerved and flipped over several times, coming to rest on its side leaning against a parked car.

The driver of the BMW, shocked and trembling, nevertheless rushed to the Land Rover and extracted three people, two women and a toddler, from the interior of the car which was resting on its side. . All were taken tothe hospital to be checked further though they seemed to be in fair condition, given the serious nature of the accident.

I shudder to think if there had been someone crossing the street at that moment of if kids from the playground or the school were nearby. Nobody actually witnessed who was at fault this time. The attendant says the Range Rover ran the light. Regardless, the fact is that cars are regularly driving on or across Underhill Avenue very high speeds. it is not uncommon to see cars running the traffic lights or driving very fast in an effort to make as many blocks as possible before being stopped by a red light,. Driving to make the light without regard for safety of people on foot on our streets will, sooner or later, result in catastrophe. It is a fact that the leading edge of death of young children in New York is not disease but being struck by a car. his time nobody was seriously injured. Next time ... ? NOW IS THE TIME TO GET SPEEDING CARS AND RECKLESS DRIVERS OFF OUR STREETS.

The PPUABA Block Party Was Beautfiul! : May 2, 2009

The weather predictions were dire: rain, clouds and more rain. We did get a few drops but then the clouds disappeared and the sunny blue skies of a beautiful spring Saturday appeared.

People of our neighborhood came out of their homes and filled Underhill Avenue between Prospect and Park Places to partake in the annual block party of the Prospect Place - Underhill Avenue Block Association (PPUABA).

Kids skateboarded down the car-free street or drew pictures with chalk. Food was offered for sale along with fabulous home-made baked goods. A flea market sold all kinds of stuff. And the plants and books laid out on tables were abuzz with customers.

It was a fabulous party celebrating an association that strives to keep our community safe, more pleasant, diverse and united. What a day!
